Place the Ham into the oven, uncovered. Bake for approximately 30 minutes. While the Ham is cooking with the Beer on it, mix the Pineapple Juice and Brown Sugar.

Hobbies are expensive and if your financial means are low, an expensive hobby might not be the one for you. And this is where the OP needs to recalculate his expectations to fit in with his current financial predicament. He cannot afford a new radio, and from the sounds of it probably cannot afford a 2nd hand one either, but AR is much more than a w transceiver from ICoYaeWoood.
Affordable radio is still out there. And there is lot of it going on, but it is not a w transceiver from a big manufacturer, it is generally qrp, in kit form or home brew and can be done very cheaply and is affordable on even the most limited budget.

Sure the case is well worn but the front panel is clean and nice. Only way I could afford to try mobile HF. If you are too proud to buy used, you can find some models that are new and not too dearly priced.
But if you just look on ebay or some online prices you will see the max prices or overpriced, in many cases. Go to hamfests and shop around. Even smaller ones. Online prices are not a true representation of all of the market.

Also it would help if we new your budget. Modern radios like the Icom Mk2G serial number above XXXX , Icom IC and even the great IC can be had for very good used prices. The Kenwood TSSAT price has been coming way down used and it has an internal antenna tuner to boot. In my opinion, don't buy a rig more than 15 years old, because parts are no longer made to fix it if something goes wrong.

I got my license in At that time, a typical new ham might go to Radio Shack and buy an HTX That's what I did. The Baofengs seem to have lousy audio and a questionable front-end, but they will get you on the air. That's still the approximate price range for an entry-level HF rig like the Yaesu FTD which, unlike the radios of the late 90s, has VHF and UHF built in or the Icom It seems to me that the same dollar amount today will buy you about as much radio today as it did back then.
Note the cost of everything else has roughly increased by 50 percent since Now, with that said, I think the "radio-quality-per-inflation-adjusted-dollar-spent" metric has varied over time.
I think it probably hit a high point in the s when ham radio was at the height of its popularity, and then declined throughout the s and s as equipment became computerized, and the Japanese manufacturers were no longer "cheap". Keep in mind that 20 years ago, if you wanted to buy a used radio, you either needed to go to a hamfest, participate in a swap net, or pick up a dead-tree magazine today, I can find a dozen radios that meet my needs in five minutes using eBay, QRZ and QTH.

And besides, if the older ham equipment had all the features of today's rigs, it would have cost three to four times as much as it did. And if all those features were available back then, those rigs would have been three or four times larger too.

Went to a hamfest a month ago. That radio could carry him for decades but even if he buys a newer rig I will bet he will never forget his first contacts on that radio. A lot of us can remember when it was state of the art.
Ham radio is way cheaper than most hobbies if you want it to be. When people call in my net they don't get special treatment because they have an Icom The OP had a that went belly up it would appear. I am Kenwood guy, and there are plenty of old Kenwoods out there at good prices for new hams or hams that have limited budgets for equipment.
And i am sure that is the same for Yaesu and Icom stuff too. I have been a ham since starting when i was high school. Even back then there was a range of elite equipment that I could only dream about, such as Collins, and top of the line Hammerlund or Hallicrafters stuff.
Stuff that only doctors or lawyers could afford. So i really think nothing has changed in that there always has been a class of gear that was out of reach from us "normal folks".
So is true today. I also think if one considers inflation and compares the value of the dollar now to back then i would say that it is probably about the same with regard to the price of equipment. I think with the technology available today, even though it may be "expensive" we do get an awful lot of functionality for the dollar, maybe more than the old days.

Radio equipment has always been low tech. There is only so much you can do with a radio wave until you realize you've made it worse trying to make it better. A scientist will discover a new means of sending information you we don't understand yet. Something tells me it will have something to do with gravity since it is universal.

About the only thing that is true is that it is much more difficult if not impossible for most people to build something comparable to what they can buy. Heathkit is long gone and there is no comparable company but Heathkit stuff was not cheap in dollars.

For less money and less capability, go to the Homebrew thread and see what KB1WSY has done. I run a 32 year old transceiver, much modified. If you gave me one of the modern does everything DSP rigs, I'd try it, but I doubt it would offer enough more for me to want to buy one, as I know what the RF capabilities are of what I have and what RF capabilities I need.
It's given me enough for 'top of the Honor roll'. Bells and whistles are another matter, but I prefer simplicity rather than a gazillion memories Back in the s, 50s and early 60s, amateurs built their gear because many could not afford to buy. Today, if you can't afford to buy, then - even though you aren't going to get a super-duper fully synthesised all solid state DSP rig - build something simple.

There was a small little surplus electronics store on the Main Street of Bay Shore -- where I purchased my first real receiver in the early s. I used to spend hours and hours just hanging out with the owner I was a 13 year old little squirt financing my new ham radio habit with a paper route and any type of odd job I could find.
His store looked very much like Hall's. It was not as organized, however. Where does this stuff come from? Do the math and compare real dollars with gear pricing of the past. Too, the gear itself is fabulous today light years ahead of anything produced in the past. I'm going to carefully word this so to not trigger an emotional response, but one man's situation does not impugn an entire industry.
He's also making broad implications based upon new HF gear. If he would just put forth a little effort, he'll see that he can get some terrific deals on repurposed gear for examply on DMR, and gear for all of the bands 50 MHz and above.
